“When The Jaguar Sleep” by J.A. Kalis is her debut novel, and my first read by this author. I don’t read a lot of jungle/adventure books, but I was quite happy with what I read. Great characters and and an amazingly descriptive plot that takes place mostly in the Ecuadorian Jungle. It’s a race for survival and escape with some really good background into the Inca/Aztec culture. Fast paced and exciting from start to finish. The finish is a bit of a cliffhanger, but still ended on a good solid note. J.A. Kalis has another novel “The Travel Mate” an International Thriller that I am looking forward to reading. Recommend for the adventure seekers out there.

When The Jaguar Sleeps A jungle adventure The Curse Of Inca Gold Book 1 edition by JA Kalis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

When The Jaguar Sleeps by J.A. Kalis offers the reader an intense, page-turning adventure (which makes one appreciate being able to experience this from the comparative comfort of their own home.)

As one of the characters astutely states, “be careful what you wish for,” which could be considered the theme of this novel.
J.A. takes great care in bringing the Jungle setting to life – details of the setting and the discomfort this causes are brilliantly described. What the principal characters experience in the jungle makes the participants in the Discovery show, “Naked and Afraid” seem to be on a summer vacation! Just when you think it can’t get any worse for the characters… something happens and you groan with them. The story also weaves in some intriguing facts and history of the region.

The ending hints that more adventures are yet to come. Hat’s OFF – FIVE STARS
I was attracted to the theme of this book because I travel and work in the Ecuadorian jungle (el Oriente). I found the descriptions of the areas and places to be mostly accurate; even the legend of Atahualpa's hidden gold is still told throughout the region here. What I found a little annoying was the over-simplistic manner in which the narritive was written, as if the author's first language is something other than English and English is a learned language. That is the sense, or the "feel" of the flow of the writing. Apart from this the story is good and entertaining and enjoyable, especially if you are interested in jungle adventure themes. The book certainly kept me interested and turning the pages to see what was going to happen next!
I really enjoyed When the Jaguar Sleeps; it had everything a fast-paced survival through the jungle story should have. Opening up with a superbly well-done plane crash scene, the book’s main characters (Didier and Florent) find themselves forced to be their own rescuers as they trek out of the jungle. Along the way, treasure is found, villains pursue them, and the environment takes its toll as the two of them fight for survival. The story was very well written and easy to follow, it moved at a fast-steady pace and never got bogged down or boring. Adventure readers will love When the Jaguar Sleeps. A++
This is a great, action packed novel. I felt like I was really in the jungle and the setting was properly researched.

I don't want to give away the plot, but it follows 2 plane crash survivors through the jungle trying to get back to safety and they meet with natives and grave robbers. There is always danger lurking somewhere, sometimes the situation is worse than others. There is sort of a twist at the ending that leaves it open for a sequel, should the author so choose, or it could be left as is. I closed the book wondering "is he really safe now?"
The best I can say is that the author made a sincere effort. The plot follows a predictable trail but it does have a narrative arc with a main character who is tested by experience.
But it did not arouse or keep my interest. When a book begins with tourists in a small airplane, you know the plane is going to crash. You know the pilot will die and only a few passengers will survive. This was supposed to be a tour with one guide and four tourists. Expensive. Yet one tourist is out of a job, making the whole thing even less believable. You get the crash, the trek through the jungle, the lost treasure, the good guys and bad guys, etc, etc. That the characters are not particularly interesting may be due to the flat writing style of simple, declarative sentences.
The most important aspect as a majority non-fiction reader in any novel is its accuracy and realism. I love adventure stories based in Africa or South America due to the primitive nature of many areas in these lands and how people born in Western cultures survive in these arenas. I felt that Mr. Kalis did an excellent job of focusing not just on the characters and plot, but also upon how the crash occurs and his descriptive knowledge of the Ecuadorian jungle and tribes. The action starts immediately as tourists and guides begin their harrowing descent in the air, much like Tom Hanks in the great plane crash scene where he becomes a survivor. The pages kept turning for me fast on that part. Vacation gone bad to worse the begin when the tourists try to survive daily and also interact with dangerous indigenous tribes. The interaction of the surviving characters, the European pair of Didier and Florent was very well done. I can this recommend this book to any action thriller reader.
